In 2020, former students of Glen Mills Schools filed five new lawsuits, alleging they were sexually and physically abused by staff. The claims include rape, sexual assault, beatings, and threats of violence for reporting the abuse.
The lawsuits represent a broader group of 300 former students who say they were abused at the school between 1976 and 2018.
One former student, who attended Glen Mills in 2016 and 2017, described being thrown to the ground, stomped on, choked, spat on, and called racial slurs by staff. He said the abuse caused lasting physical and emotional trauma.
Another former student, who attended the school for six months in 1987, revealed he was repeatedly sexually and physically abused. He described his time at Glen Mills as a daily nightmare and said the abuse was so severe that he eventually ran away.
The lawsuits accuse Glen Mills of covering up decades of abuse to protect its funding. The school, which operated for nearly 200 years and served at-risk youth, had its licenses revoked last year.
