The parish operated an associated Catholic school that served generations of children on the South Side. At least three priests who served at Holy Angels Parish have been placed on the Archdiocese of Chicago’s list of clergy with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor, and the parish has been the subject of more than $8.8 million in clergy sexual abuse settlements.

What the Records Show

In February 2022, an $800,000 settlement was reached between the Archdiocese of Chicago and five individuals who accused five separate priests of abuse, including Father George Clements. A survivor alleged Clements sexually abused him at Holy Angels Parish beginning in 1974, when he was 7 years old, with abuse continuing through 1979 — including at the rectory of Holy Angels Church.
In March 2019, an $8 million settlement was reached with the Archdiocese of Chicago on behalf of a survivor who alleged Father John Calicott sexually abused him in the 1990s while assigned to Holy Angels Parish.
