GGH is proud to announce the filing of a groundbreaking class action lawsuit against the University of Michigan and former football coach Matt Weiss for the unlawful access and exploitation of thousands of individuals’ personal identifying information, private email accounts, and social media profiles. This lawsuit represents not just a fight for justice for those directly impacted, but a call for accountability from one of the nation’s leading institutions.
Matt Weiss, through his position as a football coach, unlawfully accessed sensitive and intimate data from female athletes at the University of Michigan. This includes private photos and videos intended solely for intimate partners. In addition, Weiss violated the privacy of over 150,000 athletes across the country, accessing their medical records and personal information without authorization.
Equally disturbing is the University of Michigan’s failure to safeguard its systems and protect its students and student athletes. Their lack of proper cyber security alerts and protections enabled Weiss to exploit this breach, accessing confidential information without detection. This glaring failure to prevent unauthorized access to highly sensitive data directly impacted current and former student-athletes, leaving them fearful of where their personal information might have ended up — including the dark web.
In the face of such violations, GGH is committed to turning over every stone in our pursuit of justice. Through litigation, we will uncover the flaws in Michigan’s cyber security protocols that led to this massive breach, and demand real change to protect vulnerable individuals from similar harms in the future.
