Here below are more details of abuse at different New Jersey facilities:

  • In June 2015, New Jersey Training School for Boys supervisor Karen Selmon, with a history of sexual misconduct, allegedly exchanged contraband for sexual acts with a 19-year-old inmate. The facility’s superintendent, Lionel Henderson, allegedly ignored the abuses.

In January 2010, a U.S. Department of Justice report revealed that about 30% of juveniles at the New Jersey Training School Detention Center in Monroe reported experiencing sexual abuse.

  • In April 2015, a former guard was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 17-year-old male inmate at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Linden, with other guards allegedly aware of the abuse.
  • Since around 2010, the Arthur Brisbane Child Treatment Center faced complaints of excessive force, inadequate supervision, and staff sexual misconduct, leading to its closure in 2005 after investigations.

In August 1984, former employee Thomas Grisard was arrested for sexually abusing children ages 13 to 15 at the facility. 

  • In October 2016, former Daytop Village art teacher Donna D. Peirce-Faley pled guilty to sex crime charges for showing explicit photos to a 17-year-old and sexually touching another male resident.

In 2005, former priest Richard Mieliwocki was indicted for sexually abusing four male teenagers, including inappropriate questioning and fondling.

  • In 2022, two staff members at the Holley Center, Terrell Wilson and Garry Rucker, were arrested for sexually abusing teens.
  • In August 2024, a lawsuit was filed against the Essex County Juvenile Detention Center, alleging misuse of isolation, inadequate medical treatment, denial of education services, and youth-on-youth assaults.
