  • In June 2018, the Archdiocese of Detroit announced that it found a now-deceased priest, Arthur Michael Karey, to have credible allegations of sexual abuse against him. Karey served the church for more than fifty years, including in Detroit, Ecorse, and Lake Orion. He passed away in 1993 at the age of 74. 
  • In October 2018, Rev. Robert Witkowski, 83, was restricted from public ministry due to credible allegations of sexual abuse involving minors. 
  • In June 2022, a jury in the Macomb County Circuit Court found former Macomb County priest Neil Kalina guilty of sex abuse. He was convicted of two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct.  He allegedly provided an underage boy with alcohol and drugs, and sexually assaulted him on several occasions.

Patrick Casey was arrested on a felony charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, stemming from accusations that he engaged in multiple sexual acts with a 24-year-old man during a confession in 2013. These serious allegations suggest that Casey abused his position of authority during a vulnerable moment.

  • In July 2019, Rev. Eduard Perrone was suspended from ministry after a former altar boy accused him of groping him. 
  • In January 2021, Fr. Lawrence Fares, 96, was added to its list of credibly accused clergy. The allegation stated that Fares had sexually abused a minor during his early ministry. 

What can I recover?

Nothing can bring back what was lost as a result of the sexual abuse that you or a loved one suffered. But under the law and in civil court, the remedy you are entitled to is financial in nature.

In a civil court, when a lawsuit is filed, the individual bringing the lawsuit (the plaintiff) is entitled to damages if they are successful. Damages can include economic damages resulting from the sexual abuse—like medical or therapy bills—but they can also include non-economic damages, which include past, current, and future emotional distress; past, current, and future diminished quality of life; and pain and suffering resulting from the sexual abuse.
