Recent accounts highlight cases of burn injuries associated with home steam saunas—products meant to promote relaxation and health—many of which could have been avoided.

Personal steam saunas, marketed for their claims of enhancing overall well-being, have been flying off shelves. One popular product, SmartSteam by SaunaBox, utilizes an external water heater and plastic tubing to release steam inside the portable sauna tent via a small puck-shaped device (“steam disbursement box”).

The company advertises numerous benefits, including improved sleep, muscle relaxation, pain relief, increased circulation, lower stress, and even glowing skin.

Nonetheless, substantial safety concerns have been raised about the product. Customers have alleged that its defective design has led to serious burn injuries. When we examined the common issues that were reported, we found that several of them had difficulties securing the lid of the steamer, resulting in boiling water spilling or shooting out. Many of these individuals are believed to have sustained first or second degree burns as a result.
